Io non voglio diventare vecchio
perchè lo sono già stato mille volte
e so già il buio e quella vile tempesta.
Ora che piango come vidi
pianger mio padre,
la stessa ruga e la testa
abbattuta, piena di sgomento,
imparo che la giovinezza non corre
nelle sorprese del sangue
ma nello sguardo che un vento
strappa da terra
per vedere in questo duro paese
l’infinita somiglianza tra Dio
e il viso di lei tutte le sere, i rami
nudi contro il cielo, il vino
fermo nel bicchiere...
I don’t wish to grow old
as I’ve done it a thousand times before
and thus darkness and that worthless rage are not new to me.
Crying now as I once saw
my father –
the same wrinkle and that head, lowered,
full of dismay –
do I realize youth runs not
in the wonders of blood
but in a look that the wind
tears from the world
in order to see night after night
in this hard land, the infinite resemblance
between God and her face,
as bare branches contrast the sky,
a still glass of wine...
