Frammento per mia madre
E thank you gridando
da un palcoscenico
(o da un transatlantico)
io vorrei
vedendole a sera
sulle terrazze
Fragment for My Mother
And yelling ‘thank you’
from a stage
(or from a cruise liner)
I would like
you to see life begin anew
and the face of the girls that you’ve been and are
just as one thinks of roses as eternal
watching them in the evening
on balconies

Tu sarai una donna
ragionerai come io
non ho fatto mai. Sarai me
ma porterai la gonna.
La notte avrà un’altra
dolcezza per te,
non sentirai questa asprezza
chiudendo le mani.
Anche le grandi piogge per te
saranno canzoni.
Sarai una donna, volgerai
molto amore, amore forte
come nel mare volge l’onda,
il tuo invisibile plancton
contro la morte fonda.
Ne avrai gli spasmi e il risalire
improvviso delle risa,
il pensiero sarà alla sera
una dolce fronda
sopra gli occhi.
Sarai un miracolo per tanti,
anche senza fare niente.
Una traccia
per chi non vede più le stelle.
Apparirai come tua madre, bella,
una scintilla.
Sentirò le tue mani piccole
per sempre giocarmi sulla faccia
come foglie che il vento
muove sulla terra.
E quando sarà finita la mia guerra
e mi sfuggiranno le parole
sarai il privilegio
di una canzone alta, che non muore.

You will be a woman
who thinks in a way
I never have. You will be me
but in a skirt.
The night will bring you
a different sweetness,
you will not feel coarseness
in shutting your hands.
Even heavy rains will
be songs for you.
You will be a woman, you’ll offer
much love, strong love
the way a wave turns in the sea,
your invisible plankton
against profound death.
You’ll feel its throes
and a sudden laughter leap up,
thought will be a sweet
branch above your eyes
in the evening.
Without doing anything, you’ll
be a miracle to many.
A trail for
those who no longer see the stars.
You will seem your mother, beautiful,
a radiant sparkle.
I will ever feel those little
hands playing on my face
like leaves pushed
over the ground by the wind.
And when my war will have ended
and words move beyond my reach
you will be the reward
of a loud, undying song.
those who no longer see the stars.
You will seem your mother, beautiful,
a radiant sparkle.
I will ever feel those little
hands playing on my face
like leaves pushed
over the ground by the wind.
And when my war will have ended
and words move beyond my reach
you will be the reward
of a loud, undying song.

Non chiamarlo, viene
nella sua forza semilucente,
è già una parte del tuo sorriso
viene come il profumo dei boschi,
un niente, il muso improvviso
della lepre, è già una piega
nelle tue mani, siede
figura. La felicità
è l'attesa, è il tempo.
The Test Indicates ‘Pregnant’
Don’t call to him, he’ll be along
with his quasi luminous force,
already a part of your smile,
he’ll be along like a forest fragrance,
a trifle, the hare’s unpredictable
snout, already a crease in your hands,
he occupies the throne you are becoming.
It’s an addition
as boundless as clouds,
it startles like a wind picking up
that bends branches but provokes their colors.
My beautiful love filled with torment,
his impression is already in our
stamp. Happiness is in
the waiting, it is time.

vedrai rapido
sui vetri, sull'alluminio del banco,
sarà una sera come questa
che nel vento rompe la luce
e le nubi del giorno, sarà
un grande momento:
lo sapremo io e te soli.
La felicità del tempo è dirti sì,
ci sei, una forza segreta
uno sgomento ti fa, non la mia
giovinezza che cede, non l'età
matura, non il mio invecchiamento -
la nostra vera somiglianza
è là dove non si vede.
Mio figlio, mio viaggiatore,
tuo padre, quello vero.
Fermati ancora in questo autogrill,
dal buio mi piacerà rivederti…

When you too will pause in this grand
highway rest-stop and see
your tired face flash onto
the glass and the aluminum of the counter,
it will be an evening like this one
where the wind breaks up the day’s light
and passing clouds, it will be
a wondrous moment:
only you and I will get it.
You’ll set out again
with slight agitation, almost
a memory and the silence of display shelves,
of gas attendants, their caps,
all will be turned lightly to song
behind you.
The joy of time’s passing is telling you: yes,
you’re there, a secret force
a consternation creates you, not my
waning youth, not the mature
years, not my growing old –
our true resemblance goes
beyond the visible.
My son, my traveler,
your hell, your virtue
will be your dog-like or angel-like hearing
that senses in unison the turning of the planets
and a pill falling into a cup
two floors below,
where two old folks
attend to each other.
This resounding love will be
your father, your real one.
Stay for a spell in this highway rest-stop,
it will be a pleasure to see you again, out of the darkness...

d’azzurro nela voce
e una sete accesa
che nessun video cattura,
mentre van via tutti in aria o in rete,
felice lui
di restare
con la sua luce dura
fino agli ultimi brindisi
Poet of This Post-Pasolinian Age
He remains ever more in silence.
Even within words,
behind a line of drinking glasses
in the film about the dinner
recently ended among half
curtseys and good-byes more quick
than sincere.
(Not, it’s not a shortness of breath,
but poetry
is a sharp blow, he says in a sort
of intoxication or perhaps
of monstrous lucidity, it’s an angelic
virus that lies in wait,
a squatting warrior
who laughs and digs his paws into his prey.)
His eyes, one can see, betray him with
a startle, a smile
that comes from blood’s ashes.
Behold him, the poet of this post-Pasolinian age,
system error, bluish
ruins in his voice
and a burning thirst
that no video screen captures,
while all go off into the air
or onto the net,
he, happy,
to remain
with his resistant light
until the last toasts
(the most sentimental, the most voiced)
among the fellows who’ve yet to leave.
